For the activation, you only need one when you purchase the Enterprise edition. If you are evaluating the Enterprise edition, then you do not have to activate your copy to evaluate, but will need to purchase the Enterprise edition once it expires.

If you are using the GPL version, then no activation is needed.

As for the issue at hand, if you are able to reproduce the problem, please let us know how you reproduce it.

Thanks for the report. Could you tell us more how you got this exception trace? Did you press Ctrl+C in the console where EiffelStudio was started?
